Proposal

Candidate Name Morgan Clark
Pathway 2D Concept Art
Project Title G10W CITY
Project Concept

Outline – Describe the project:

For this project, I plan on creating a 2D concept isometric city. I would use vapour-wave colour schemes, such as blue and pink, as my city will dynamically feature neon lighting used within this environment. I am inspired by a voxel themed style, and discovered a software called ‘voxelmagica’ that allows you to easily create cubic sceneries, that I may consider using as an overall model block-out, for paint overs and details. The buildings themselves would include glass and laser paneling, and the overall environment would be quite dark and moody, as this is accurate to the nature of Cyberpunk. In addition to this, my project will also include a second concept board full of sci-fi and cybernetic weapons, mostly guns, lasers and swords.

Specifics – List what you plan to include/create:

These are the lists of assets and concept pieces I plan on creating for this themed project, the purpose of this is to get a clear picture in my head on what I have to create, and the process I will take to this this in my development and production logs.

  • Futuristic themed buildings (using different shapes, sized and proportions)
  • Vapour-wave colour palette – Blue and pink colours (paneling, lighting, shading)
  • Neon signs, lights, bill-boards
  • Neon and science fiction hover-boards and motorcycle
  • 2D sci-fi/cyberpunk gun/sword concepts on presentation board
Process

Chosen Workflow/process for my project:

Using my research conducted in my written specialism report, I have decided to use my second workflow during this project, as its most effective for creating my neon city diorama. My process for this project, will use my research as reference material, giving me inspiration for the types of concept sketches I can create, once this is gathered, I can draft up some concept sketches and colour ideas used for the beginning of my next work stages. From this, I plan on using a new software called ‘magica-voxel’, as I discovered it while gathering voxel research. This will allow me to create my voxel style, and then paint-over it for my concept art using Photoshop. I may also consider rendering my model into Unreal Engine, so I can look at things such as light and shading positions. For my second concept board, this will follow more closely to the original workflow, as its purely concept art, starting from initial ideas, silhouetting and drafting of my final sketches until the detail, and shades are again accurate and realistic. This process will involve using initial concept sketches and colour ideas, although my second workflow was chosen, due to the involvement of block-outs, as this will make it easier to create 3D perspective pieces, being as my work is going to be a 3D dimensional city.

Presentation

Presentation – How do you plan to present your project to a professional standard?

For the presentation of my 2D concept work, I will use the same methods as my previous final projects. Presented on an A3 layout board, and digitally representing the main assets, and possibly some of the finished design sketches. I may consider adding outer-glows, and shadows, and different background tones to bring out colours and certain details depending on how my overall product comes out. As I’m designing my diorama on a new software, I may consider showing this on a pc, as you are able to add animations to certain areas, which would be an interesting and unique way to present my work, especially when adapting and finalizing my magica-voxel block-out.
